I am a public servant, and I am running because I care about our community. While many citizens of Orange County are benefiting from growth and success, others are being left behind. While we are one of the richest counties in the state, we also have some of the highest concentrations of poverty. This cannot stand. My professional and public service careers are built on the foundation of community – working together to care for people and solve difficult problems. My philosophy is to connect and build: people, relationships, and the future. My candidacy is about advocating for the voiceless and working together to create a better community for ALL Orange County residents.
Brian Crawford is the oldest of eight children and was raised by a single mother in the projects of New York City. Education and hard work were Brian’s path to a better future. He is committed to making sure all children have access to quality education. Brian understands the importance of quality affordable housing and home ownership on a personal level. He also knows that access to jobs and transportation is critical for families throughout Orange county to grow and succeed.
Brian can trace his family’s history in North Carolina to pre-Civil War times. He reconnected with his North Carolina family when he moved here in 1992 and began working for Legacy First Union Bank while simultaneously pursuing a law degree. At that time, he also became active in Orange County government.
Brian has served Orange County in the following capacities:
- Founding Chair of the Orange County Affordable Housing Task Force
- Vice President of the Orange County Democratic Party
- Member, Orange County Elections and Planning Boards
- Sr. VP and General Counsel, NC Community Development Initiative
Brian was moved to run for the office of County Commissioner At-Large when he saw the resurgence of the Confederate Flag as an issue in Orange County. He has a long history of public service and believes deeply in the importance of a local government that is responsive to the community.
Brian currently serves as a lawyer at Carrboro-based Sanford Halshouser LLP, where he regularly represents BB&T as outside counsel in matters related to financing of affordable housing. He currently lives in Hillsborough with his wife, Robin, and 11-year old daughter, Genesis, who attends Orange County public schools.
